Life at Kg Balung Cocos, Tawau

Kg Balung Cocos is located in Tawau, along the Tawau-Semporna Highway right after the Balung River, turn left and you reach the village. It is a Cooperative Society of the Cocos Community where each family gets about 15 acreas and 7 acres (phase 2). There are more than 100 members in the cooperative and oil palm is the primary crop planted. This cooperative is one of the more successful cooperative. They have only one request; that piped water reached their homes. They have to rely on rain water and spring water or water bought from lorries that came to sell water. Many people had made assurances and promises but we have yet to see the water reaching their homes. They have electricity supply. That is good. Only piped water is not there. Other than that they have all the modern facilities like primary school, taska, 'surau' and the latest 'R&R' (along the highway). If you want to visit the place just take a bus from the town. The Tawau Airport is not too far away from the village. The town is further than the airport.

We were invited to attend another Cocos Wedding at Kg Balung Cocos Tawau on September 26, 2009 by Ms Pelinza Alidie, a fourth generation of the Jackson family. Pelinza is the granddaughter of my father's eleder sister, Wak Eliat. Pelinza daughter married a Bugis whose profession is a teacher in Tawau. Met some old friends and relatives and some had some stories to tell.
